I still remember quite clearly the first encounter with Julian Ruiz at the Audiofilm studio in Madrid. Juan de La Cierva- Kevin's manager, a wonderful gentle and very generous man who kept us all on retainers during this time, Kevin, Ollie and I arrived in a group into the rather big control room where most of the music was recorded.s
The studio room itself was huge carpet clad and free from any natural resonance, rather sterile as was the chilly atmosphere… A few months earlier we had all been in New York to record some demos for CBS. It had been a fantastic experience recording in the historical building on Manhattan where Screen Gems once had had its offices and studio.. where people like Carole King and Neil Sedaka once had been composing/recording some of their most famous stuff, like the Tapestry album and Oh Carole… in small rooms next to each other.

Legendary record producer Bill Szymczyk helped dial in sounds for The Eagles, Joe Walsh, The James Gang, The Who, Elvin Bishop, and The J. Geils Band. Many have argued that AOR [Album-Orientated Rock] radio was launched on a handful of producers' — including Szymczyk's — watch. His many hits for The Eagles only add weight to that theory.
Bill's first big break into the business as a producer would come artighet of his late 1960's collaboration with blues legend B.B. King. "The Thrill is Gone's" title may have advertised a somber mood, but working side by side with B.B., Szymczyk remembers the studio vibe as being just the opposite. The Main Ingredient was a Harlem based soul group composed of lead singer Donald McPherson, Luther Simmons, Jr., and Panama-born Tony Silvester. They got their name came from a Coke bottle… Led by producer/arranger Bert DeCoteaux, the group would reach the R&B Top charts with a string of singles in the ’70s including “You’ve Been My Inspiration,” a cover of The Impressions’ “I’m So Proud,” and “Spinning Around (I Must Be Falling in Love).” Euphrates River is the group’s six studio album and includes the laidback classic “Summer Breeze,” which was originally recorded by American soft rock duo Seals and Crofts and later covered by The Isley Brothers.
