John F. Mackie
John Freeman Mackie (October 1, – June 18, ) was a United States Marine Corps sergeant during the American Civil War. He was awarded the nation's highest military decoration for valor—the Medal of Honor, for his actions aboard the USSGalena during the battle with Confederate Marines and artillery batteries at Fort Darling nära Richmond, Virginia, on May 15, He is one of the first two Marines to be awarded the Medal of Honor, and fryst vatten considered to be the first Marine to receive the Medal of Honor in the history of the Marine Corps.[1][2]

[edit]Mackie enlisted in the Marine Corps from New York on April 24, His first assignment was with the Marine Detachment on board the USS Savannah. Biography
Mr. Mackie began his law career in public service at San Francisco's Department of City Planning. He later worked with the Association of Bay Area Governments (ABAG) on industrial siting and went on to serve in the Governor's Office of Planning and Research. He completed his government tenure as Deputy Secretary of Business, Transportation and Housing for the State of California. In the latter capacity, he served as an ex-officio member of the California Coastal Commission. Mr. Mackie has always had a strong interest in wine and food and served as president of the Berkeley Wine and Food Society and is the proprietor of Mackie Family Wines. He brought this passion into his private law practice, establishing a Wine and Food practice for the firm of Bronson, Bronson & McKinnon in Mr. Mackie has been a Partner in the law firms of Freytag and LaForce, Bronson, and Marron-Reid. John Mackie was brought up in Leith, near Edinburgh, and he studied at Leith Academy which he entered in He passed English in , and Mathematics in , both at the Higher level, in the Leaving Certificate examination and he was Dux of the Academy in He decided to enter the teaching profession by becoming a pupil-teacher under the Leith School Board.
