    HERNING, Denmark — For 90 minutes, Meaghan Mikkelson sat in a hotel conference room in Calgary and waited for the bad news.

    It was Aug. 14 — the final day of Team Canada’s day training camp — and the day Hockey Canada was naming the national team that would head to Denmark for the women’s world championships.

    While she waited, Mikkelson watched as dozens of players walked to the coaches room down the hall. One by one, they marched in. Some emerged with the good news that they’d made the team; those players would head to another meeting room where the selected team would be waiting. Others, who were cut, gathered their things and went to the bus to go back home.

    Mikkelson had no idea how many players were on that bus, or who had already been selected for the player roster. By the end, though, the math was easy.

    She was alone in the conference room and she had convinced herself that was by design. M

    On Growing Up in St. Albert

    t8n: Tell me a bit about growing up in St. Albert.

    MM: Well, I’ve been living in St. Albert since I was eight, so it’s where I was raised—my childhood, my junior high, my high school, all my years of minor sport—everything. I had a great childhood there and tremendous support from the community, all the way right up to today. My parents are still there, so I come back and visit quite often.
