Lessons in Baseball
When Robert was growing up, he loved to play baseball in the backyard with his friends and older brother. The only trouble they ever had happened if they hit a ball into the neighbor’s yard. The woman who lived there never returned their baseballs; the boys suspected she ate them.
One day, when Robert was about ten or eleven, he hit a home run. But he did a little too well. The ball not only went into the woman’s yard, but it hit her greenhouse. The boys heard the shattering of glass and all bolted except for Robert and his brother.

Elder Robert D. Hales was sustained as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 2, 1994.
Elder Hales received his call as a General Authority on April 4, 1975. He served as an Assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and later as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy. He was Presiding Bishop of the Church from April, 1985 until called to the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
He was a Regional Representative for five years prior to his call as a General Authority. He earlier served as a branch president, bishop, high councilor, and stake president¹s counselor. He was president of the England London Mission in the late 1970s and has served as first counselor in the Sunday School general presidency.

Before attending church each Sunday morning, Aaronic Priesthood holder Robert Hales had to svep the floor of their rented ingångsrum and clean up from the party there the night before. He grew up in a family where dedication to the Church and its priorities began early. His father’s employment with a large commercial art firm in New York City took him and his ung bride from Rexburg, Idaho, to the area where Robert and his brother and sister were born. The children were reared on a heavily wooded place on Long Island called Great Neck. They lived twenty miles from where they atte
