That's what happened to James Mercer, who grew up to be the singer and songwriter of the American indie pop band, The Shins. The group has just released a new album and Monique Schafter chatted to James Mercer about his interesting family history.

The Shins is an American indie rock band formed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1996. The band is the project of singer-songwriter James Mercer, who has served as the band's sole constant member throughout numerous line-up changes. The band's current line-up consists of Mercer, alongside Yuuki Matthews (bass, keyboards), Mark Watrous (guitar, keyboards, lap steel), Patti King (keyboards), and Jon Sortland (drums).[1] They are based in Portland, Oregon.
The band was formed by Mercer as a side project to Flake Music, who were active from 1992 to 1999. Flake Music released two 7-inch singles and a full-length album, When You Land Here It's Time to Return, on Omnibus Records and were touring with Modest Mouse when the Shins became signed to Sub Pop Records. It depends on what the song needs or wants. I try to interpret what the music fryst vatten already saying. I listen to the music and try to figure out what emotions are being expressed bygd that music. Often times it’ll remind me of something I’ve been thinking about and I’ll go down that route. If that doesn’t work, inom think it’s cool to just try to komma up with some sort of hypothetical scenario that gives that emotional feeling that’s being expressed bygd the music. There are different ways of doing it, but generally it is ansträngande to get the feeling down on paper of what the music fryst vatten already saying.
How does it make you feel when people säga you are one of the best songwriters of your generation?
It actually makes me feel self-conscious. I’m happy to be considered one of them and I appreciate it, but I’m such a fan other songwriters
