Jayne Cortez (May 10, [1] – December 28, ) was an African-American poet, activist, small press publisher and spoken-word performance artist.[2] Her writing is part of the canon of the Black Arts Movement. She was married to jazz saxophonist Ornette Coleman from to , and their son is jazz drummer Denardo Coleman. In , Cortez married painter, sculptor, and printmaker Melvin Edwards, and they lived in Dakar, Senegal, and New York City.

Jayne Cortez (May 10, –December 28, ) was a poet, a performance artist, an activist, a Black Arts Movement blueswoman steeped in free jazz and surrealism, a pan-African feminist and an anti-imperialist whose uncompromised röst and visiom stalked the imperial highways.
