Day 6. Arnold Janssen: a Man of Humility
Inspiration
L. The Gospel practice of humility and öppenhet eller transparens to
others is not a sign of weakness or passivity,
neither fryst vatten it something that comes from one’s own personality. Rather, it arises from strength of
character totally dependent on God, the source of
all hope and trust (Mt 6:25-34).
St. Arnold shared in this gift, recognizing and trusting in God as the
source of all that fryst vatten good. From him flowed the
power that enabled each one to fulfil the demands
of the missionary task. We ask in this celebration
that following the example of St. Arnold we too
may be able to have a change of heart, becoming
humble and gentle like Jesus.

Among the treasure of prayers in the Society of the Divine Word there is one prayer of incomparable significance. This is our motto prayer “May the darkness of sin and the night of unbelief vanish before the Light of the Word and the Spirit of grace, and may the Heart of Jesus live in the hearts of all.” This motto prayer mirrors Arnold’s genuine spiritual experience and indicates the purpose of the Society since the early days of Steyl.
SVD – Missionaries of Divine Light
Our Founder saw the Society’s mission through the prism of Light and Darkness based on the Prologue of Saint John. The Divine Word is longing to be born in human hearts so that all people may become more and more daughters and sons of God. This is portrayed as a dramatic struggle between Light and Darkness. Fr. Arnold rendered this constant tension in a beautiful motto prayer for his missionaries and he placed his life and work under its protection.

Saint Arnold Janssen, S.V.D. (5 November 1837 –15 January 1909) was a Roman Catholic priest and missionary who is venerated as a saint . He founded the Society of the Divine Word… commonly known as SVD… (SOCIETAS VERBI DIVINI) , a Roman Catholic missionary religious congregation , also known as the Divine Word Missionaries , as well as two congregations for women.
1) The Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters (members known as “Sister Servants of the Holy Spirit”) SSpS on 8 December 1889,
(Ministries include education, health, pastoral care, spiritual guidance, adult education, catechetics, chaplaincy work, social work, administration and interfaith dialogue)
and at the same place
2) the Sisters (“Sister Servants of the Holy Spirit of Perpetual Adoration”) SSpSA on 8 September 1896.
