Biography of Harry Houdini
Harry Houdini remains one of the most famous magicians in history. Although Houdini could do card tricks and traditional magic acts, he was most famous for his ability to escape from what seemed like anything and everything, including ropes, handcuffs, straightjackets, jail cells, water-filled milk cans, and even nailed-shut boxes that had been thrown into a river. After World War I, Houdini turned his knowledge about deception against Spiritualists who claimed to be able to contact the dead. Then, at age 52, Houdini died mysteriously after being hit in the abdomen.

This November 5th marks the 100th anniversary of Houdini's suspended straitjacket escape in Times Square. History records this as his first suspended straitjacket escape in New York City. However, I recently discovered that is notthe case. His first was actually a year earlier in 1916. It's a story that has gone untold and is pretty interesting. So let's tell it!
Despite the general perception, Houdini did not perform many outside stunts in New York City. Unlike other cities, the police would not tolerate the massive crowds and snarled traffic. In fact, when Houdini first arranged to be nailed into a packing crate and "thrown" into the East River in 1912, police arrived to stop the stunt. Kalush via a mention by Will Goldston says it was September of 1915 in Kansas City. Silverman says it was hanging forty-five feet from the office building of the Minneapolis Evening Tribune on September 29, 1915 sourced to a newspaper in the Stanley Palm collection.

Well the Sept 29th, 1915 date in Minneapolis is well sourced, so that leaves the Kansas City date that needs more research.
