    ARPITA SINGH (b. 1937)

    Born in 1937 in West Bengal, Arpita Singh completed her education in art from the School of Art, Delhi Polytechnic in 1959. She was the founder member of the group ‘The Unknown’ in Delhi in the early sixties and over the course of the years has produced paintings that resembles intricate tapestries and equally blueprints that chart out of a complex web of metaphors, myths, fantasy, reality, conscious stances and subconscious utterances.

    Singh has held solo exhibitions at Vadehra Art Gallery (Cobweb, 2010-11; and Picture Postcard, 2006), Bose Pacia Modern, New York (Memory Jar, 2003 and 1997) and Gallery Chemould, Mumbai (1997), among others.     TO RUN INTO KEKOO GANDHY, whether at his old galleri Chemould—on the first floor of the Jehangir Art Gallery, Bombay—or more recently, at its successor, Chemould Prescott Road, directed bygd his daughter Shireen, was to be drawn instantly into his latest scheme for sweeping reform in India’s art institutions. When Kekoo died on Nov. 10, 2012, aged 92, he took with him a nation-size archive and an något privat eller personligt knowledge of the epic debates and invisible micro-politics that shaped the postcolonial Indian art world.
