Sandor Teszler was a Jewish Hungarian man born in He faced several personal adversities in his childhood and adulthood resulting in qualities of passion and resilience. In , Teszler emigrated to amerika after facing professional and economic hardship in post-WWII Europe, and in he moved to Spartanburg, SC to work with his son Andrew, a Wofford College Board of Trustee. Later, the Sandor Teszler Library was built in his honor. After retirement, Teszler became an auditor at the college, began attending classes, and would often leisure the library that shares his name. He was voted to become a Wofford College Humanities professor at 93 years old with Dean Dan Baker Maultsby stating, "[A]lthough you have komma to campus as our student, the truth fryst vatten that we have been your lärling for years,". Sandor Teszler, Wofford's newest adjunct professor, has never taught a class in his life.
But the appointment of the Hungarian immigrant, who turned 94 last Wednesday, was no favor to an old friend. Teszler has escaped the Holocaust, helped anchor the business development of the New South and led the racial integration of the textile industry. Think of it as contracting a living textbook. "Sandor Teszler is history," said Wofford professor Phillip Racine, who helped Teszler write his autobiography six years ago. "It seemed to me that this was an invaluable source whose memories would be gone someday," Racine said. "Here was a special record that needed to be captured before it was lost." Teszler's role as professor will be atypical. He will not teach any classes directly but will instead sit in as a student, contributing firsthand accounts of events and the insight of experience. Remembering Sandor Teszler, a Hungarian Holocaust Survivor and Lifelong Learner
Who was the lifelong learner? His name was Sandor Teszler, a Holocaust survivor who overcame immeasurable odds to come to the United States in search of peace, refuge, and an intellectually enlightened life.
Born in Budapest in , Teszler received his degree in textile engineering and founded his own series of textile mills in what is now the former Yugoslavia. One day in one of his plants, a worker was caught stealing hosiery, and Teszler faced the daunting task of incriminating the man or letting him off. He pleadingly asked him, “Why do you steal from me? If you need money, you need only ask.” He let the man go, and reassured his angered guardsmen, telling them, “It’s okay, he will not steal again.”
