‘Bas Princen. Image and Architecture’ at the Vitra Design Museum Gallery presents a selection of lyrical architectural photographs by Bas Princen that explore the historic relationship between architecture and material culture. The Dutch photographer and artist, who trained as an industrial designer in Eindhoven and studied architecture in Rotterdam, has made a name for himself capturing the experience of architecture and place through photography.
Known for his focus on the places where architecture meets the urban and natural landscape, Princen takes images that are extremely powerful and poetic – this exhibition at Vitra presents him foremost as an artist, rather than an architectural photographer

Dutch artist Bas Princen (*1975 in Rotterdam) is widely acclaimed for his portrayals of architecture and urban landscapes. The exhibition at Vitra Design Museum Gallery provides an insight into Princen’s ongoing examination of the relationship between architecture and image. The built structures depicted in the photographs originate from diverse locations and eras. They include Italian Renaissance buildings, a gargoyle atop the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, the first Crystal Palace in London, the New York skyline of the 1930s or the home that architect Robert Venturi built for his mother in Philadelphia. Each of the large-scale photographic works encapsulates different facets of Princen’s explorations. Bas Princen (* 1975 in Zeeland, Königreich der Niederlande) ist ein niederländischerKünstler und Fotograf.
Werdegang
[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]Bas Princen studierte bis 1998 Produktdesign an der Design Academy Eindhoven und bis 2002 Architektur am Postgraduate Laboratory for Architecture am Berlage Institut in Rotterdam.[1]
Sein fotografischer Schwerpunkt liegt im Bereich von Architektur und Landschaft. Hierbei erforscht er die Zusammenhänge, Schnittstellen und Transformation von natürlicher Umwelt und urbanen Landschaften.
Bas Princen beschrieb in einem Vortrag seine Arbeit folgendermaßen: „My work originates from architecture [...]. Then it has something to do with photography and it kind of ends up in the art world.
