  • 1. Ray Charles Research Paper Entry into the mundane world: Ray Charles was born on September 23, in Albany, Georgia (1). In his early years of life, Ray Charles was a son of a sharecropper and a mechanic. He and his parents moved to Florida at an early age. Ray Charles enjoyed interest in music bygd listening to Mr. Wiley Pit perform at the Red kaffebar (1). Mr. Pit serves as the greatest foundation towards the Ray's interest in music and wanting to play the piano. In addition, this influences some of Charles's actions in his "call to adventure." Call to adventure: Ray Charles' call to adventure begins after the traumatic event of his early life was when Ray witnesses the drowning death of his brother in a bath tub. The importance of Mr. Pit shows again for he was responsible for taking care of Ray and his brother, and showed to be a father figure between the two boys at the absences of their father.     Ray Charles' younger brother George drowned in the laundry tub when he was 4 years old. While attending school in St. Augustine Florida, Ray learned to use Braille to read and write and compose music. He learned how to play the sax, trumpet, and clarinet while also furthering his talent on the piano and organ. Ray was talented at playing the blues, country, and gospel. At the age of 15 Ray Charles toured in the South on the 'Chitlin Circuit'. At the age of 16 Ray Charles moved to Seattle where he met Quincy Jones, who became a lifelong friend and collaborator. Ray's early major influences included Nat King Cole and Charles Brown. In Ray Charles released 'Confession Blues' which was his first single. It did well on the R&B charts and he followed with 'Baby Let Me Hold Your Hand' and 'Kissa Me Baby'.
