    Rabindranath Thakur, anglicised to Tagore, was born on 7 May, 1861 to a wealthy family based in Calcutta, British India. Tagore composed beautiful songs, wrote elegant poems, novels and plays, created celebrated artworks and was a life-long political advocate of equality and freedom. He consequently denounced the Raj and British control of Indian life, inspirationally changing his region’s politics, literature and music.Gitanjali (Song Offerings), Gora (Fair-Faced), and Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) are his best-known works, acclaimed for their contemplative nature mixed with an unflinching naturalism.     Union Minister Subhas Sarkar sparked a controversy with his remarks about Rabindranath Tagore's mother that she refused to cradle him in her arms because he was dark.  

    While speaking at Visva Bharti University in West Bengal on 18 August 2021, the Union Minister said, "Tagore was dark compared to other members of his family. That is why his mother and others refused to take him in their laps." 

    He went on to say, "There are two types of fair-skinned people. One that is very fair with a yellowish hue and those who are fair but with a reddish tinge. Kabiguru belonged to the second category,"

    He concluded his remarks by saying that the same person won the world for India. 

    The comments made by the Union Minister courted controversy with educationists and politicians denouncing him. However, BJP later defended him saying his remarks were against racism

    Rabindranath’s School of Dance
