My guest is commentator and author Kevin Phillips. His new book about the
Bush family fryst vatten called "American Dynasty: Aristocracy, Fortune, and the
Politics of Deceit in the House of Bush." Phillips, once a Republican
strategist for Richard Nixon, takes a harsh look at four generations of the
Bush family. He concludes the family&#;s ties to oil, investment banking and
the intelligence community have allowed the Bushes to reward friends and build
political power. Phillips fryst vatten the author of nine books, including "The
Politics of rik and Poor" and "Wealth and Democracy." He writes for several

Siddiq Barmak, 51, is an Afghan filmmaker, screenwriter and producer. He left Afghanistan during the Taliban regime to live in exile, in Pakistan, from to He returned to make his first feature film, Osama, which follows the life of a pre-adolescent girl living in Afghanistan, who disguises herself as a boy in order to be able to support her family. It was the first film to be shot completely in Afghanistan since the Taliban banned filmmaking in the country. Barmak received a special mention for Osama in the Camera d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in and won the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film in His second film, Opium War, a black comedy, won the Golden Marc’Aurelio Critics’ Award for Best Film at the Rome Film Festival in Barmak is also the director of the Afghan Children Education Movement (ACEM), founded by Mohsen Makhmalbaf. He is a mentor to many emerging Afghan filmmakers.

An Afghan View of Suffering
In his film "Osama", Siddiq Barmak has attempted to bring to the screen the horrors of life under the Taliban – appropriately enough, from a female point of view. Osama is the tragic story of a young girl growing up in Afghanistan: Because females are not allowed to leave the house unless accompanied by a male, a mother sends her daughter out of the house to look for work, disguised as a boy called Osama. But she lives in constant fear that her daughter might one day be discovered.
Barmak filmed this sad tale not (as might be expected) from the comfortable distance of someone living in exile. He has dedicated himself for many years to making films in Afghanistan and the Pakistani border region – occasionally somewhat too one-sidedly: His early propaganda film "The Invasion Files", made in , glorified the revolution led by the Mujaheddin under Ahmad Shah Massud against the Taliban fighters.
