Ferdinand Magellan led the first circumnavigation of the world from 1519-1522. While Magellan did not complete the full voyage due to his death in the Philippines, the expedition proved the earth was round by sailing west to reach the East Indies. Only 18 of the original 270 crew members survived the difficult three year journey, including Juan Sebastian Elcano who took over as leader after Magellan's death. Antonio Pigaffeta, a crew member, kept a detailed journal that provides the main historical account of the expedition and descriptions of interactions with indigenous peoples in the Philippines.
