I love to draw using a continuous line and I enjoy taking my line on a journey. I see the world as lots of different lines, shapes, patterns and colours and use these key components in every piece I produce.
About Ruth Allen.
I have always loved to draw and more so since being introduced to the technique continuous line. It was in when I was taking part in a life drawing class when my art tutor suggested I draw with a continuous line. I then began drawing and the line just flowed and instead of seeing the model I was drawing I saw a serious of shapes, patterns and decoration. This approach to my work has continued with me and will always be the way I work.
The first time I was introduced to the work of mid-century design was in , I was sat at my desk in the textiles studio whilst in my first year of my arts degree. Q1 Who is Ruth?
I am an illustrator and printmaker. I work on commissions, create designs for limited edition screen prints and have illustrated a couple of books. I love all different styles of architecture and interior design.
Q2 Where do you get your inspiration?
I am inspired by architecture, mid-century design and interior design. I research for my illustrations and deigns by looking through magazines, books and everyday life.
Q3 Did you have any training?
I studied my degree in textiles & illustration at Bradford & Ilkley College. It was whilst on my degree that I started to develop my drawing style which has continued to be the most important part of my practice.
Q4 How would you describe your art?
I produce illustrative line drawings using a continuous line. I take my inspiration from mid-century design and off set colour and pattern from my line. These will then either develop into a scree

Ruth Allen's history stems from the Australian National University School of Art where she studied under Klaus Moje, Elizabeth McClure and the late Stephen Procter. Ruth graduated in and embarked upon world travels including Japan, United States and New Zealand. Throughout this time her primary focus was on developing her ideas, skills and self expression with hot glass. Ruth attended and conducted workshops, exhibited, undertook residencies and worked consistently with ideas.
Between and Ruth managed Gloria a hot glass studio and glass art business in her birth town, Auckland, New Zealand, producing a wide range of high quality and unique blown glass forms for private commissions and galleries. Gloria dissolved in early enabling Ruth to return to Australia and resume a more artistic practice. Ruth completed a Master of Fine Arts (research) grad, majoring in glass and sculpture at Monash University in
