  • Lip-Bu Tan, the CEO of Cadence, has been named by the Singapore Business Awards as Outstanding CEO (overseas) last week. These awards were launched in by the Business Times and DHL, so this year is the 27th year of the award, created to recognize business leaders in Singapore and abroad.

    As it happens, Cadence flew me first class to Singapore and put me up in the top hotel in town to cover this event&#;I wish. But as it happens I am indeed in Singapore but under my own steam.

    I don&#;t know Lip-Bu&#;s history personally, but he has an undergraduate degree from Nanyang University in Singapore and then an MS in Nuclear Engineering from MIT and an MBA from USF. So I guess like so many people he came to the US to do his master&#;s degree and, whatever plans he might have had, he ended up staying here (I came to the US in for &#;a couple of years&#; with the plan to then return to Britain.     The Semiconductor Industry Association awarded its highest honor to Lip-Bu Tan, the former CEO of Cadence Design Systems and the founder of the venture capital firm Walden International.

    Tan served as CEO of Cadence, a maker of chip design tools and simulation software, for 13 years. And in , he founded Walden International. At that time, nobody wanted to invest in semiconductor companies as chip making was getting so expensive.

    Over the years, he invested in 85 semiconductor companies. Of those, 26 were acquired and 19 went public. Almost no one has that kind of investment record. One of those companies, Credo Technology, went public earlier in mid-February, raising $ million at a value of $ billion.

    Early life and education

    Born in in Muar, Johor, förbund of Malaya (in modern Malaysia) to a Malaysian Chinese family,[4][5] Tan grew up in Singapore. He graduated from Nanyang University with a Bachelor of Science grad with a major in physics.[6] Tan later completed a mästare of Science in nuclear engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States.[4] Tan began his doctoral studies in nuclear engineering at okänt. However, after the Three Mile Island accident and the subsequent sharp reduction in opportunities in the nuclear industry, Tan left MIT and moved to the University of San Francisco in California, where he graduated with a Master of Business Administration.[
